Here's the review from Mick and Nora...

Our illustrious boss agreed that, seeing this week was the Christmas Party, we should do something different from the usual reviews.    So, as well as the individual messages that hopefully will be posted on the website, this bit is Mick and Nora’s brief and general impressions of the afternoon, or (as Claude put it in her Email) an “atmospheric” account of what went on…… Obviously, the atmosphere on arrival was very festive, a lot of excitement in the air, and even great expectations!

But it did not take long for that air of expectation to be further heightened by a burst of martial music, heralding the arrival of our comperes for the afternoon.

The Spencer Brothers flew in to great excitement and acclaim.    We have already had them pop in to previous events, but never in such style.

When they finally touched down, it soon became apparent that, not only were they in special good form today, but they were also recruiting further siblings…..(ooops, how did I manage to get out of that……?)   Nora may have managed to wriggle out of the honour,

but Mick was much braver, as well as a number of surprising clever clones who skilfully cried out to Betty about a little bit of trouble or a cat, that must have been suffering from diarrhoea… Anyway, well done Spencer Brothers….great entertainment!

We then settled down to an afternoon of very varied music, stories and poetry.

In our imaginations we were taken to St.Paul’s Cathedral, were asked if we believed in Father Christmas, and were reminded with some nostalgia of the Purple Room in Orsett.

At one time we could have been in the middle of a fairground, with the barrel organ playing, and the little people on top swaying in their leopard skins…and the French tunes fitted in well with the soldier in the funny hat, gloves and coat, miming his delight at his new attire.

There were plenty of Christmassy songs, some old some new,

and we were invited to light a Christmas candle of hope (and yes, true, we do need hope in today’s world) but the serious moments mixed well with less traditional contributions, even those “bits of filth” that we’ve become accustomed to expect, and that bring light relief and the opportunity for a good laugh.   And in the next room, we could even hear laughter all the way from Upton Park!     What an afternoon….

The football was not the only thing that was happening in the next room.   Ben, our friendly publican, had been busy preparing the food, and a jolly good buffet did she produce.   Even the drinks were provided, from Fab Club coffers, which was very nice. There were lashings of Coke, lemonade juices, and  wine, I think,

but Claudine drank most of that herself…. (only joking Claude, and, by the way, thank you for all the hard work throughout the year!)

Maureen... (sorry, blame it on the wine... ed. note)

The break to feed our faces also gave the opportunity to catch up with people we had not seen for a while.   Our intention was to do this whole thing without mentioning names, but it was so good to see

Bob Cash back with us, having heard in the week that he was ill in Hospital.  Your presence was the icing on the cake…   And if we are going to mention those who’ve been unwell, we also hear that Gordon had been in Hospital for two weeks, and very grateful to be around to tell the tale..   Good to see both of you, Gordon and Debbie Ann.

Not sure in what order all this happened, but at one point we were also transported in our imagination to Coalhouse Fort, for a crisp Christmas morning walk, that turned into a bit of a mystical experience….and then on to childhood memories of stories by the fireside before bedtime…those were the days!

Of course, through all this we were still being regaled by the Spencers, who by this time were melting away.

At times they reverted to their alter egos, or even an aussie Sheila,   but no one expected actual flashing as the macs went on and off, but flash Simon did   (oops another name…) revealing the next act to be what everyone had been waiting for, and from the corner of the room emerged two quiet, demure people who had been patiently waiting to tell us how they admire the lovely lights that decorate the county of Kent at this time of year…

Oh, and, of course, then there was the sad process of clearing up on Boxing Day…. The satsuma peel, the discarded sweet papers…no, can’t look at another mince pie.     Well, that was the song Nora identified with the most…the wonderful feeling…

yippee..another Christmas over, now we can get on with real life again (only Nora…..Mick’s a bit more normal than that).

But in the meantime, while we wait for January to come, both Mick and Nora would like to wish everyone a really good and pleasant Christmas.    Enjoy yourselves, but hope you manage a little bit of peace and contentment as well, to recharge the batteries, ready to start all over again in 2007.
