FaB Club 2nd Anniversary
Review by JB, a real FaB Club and folk clubs virgin... (1st half)
The Fab Club’s second birthday was celebrated on
I arrived at about

Guests ( Barbara, James and John) started to arrive at around
His song, Missing in Acton, was a combination of humour and catchy lyrics. The moral of his story was to ensure that one has all the correct details for a rendez-vous, especially if it’s a romantic one.

Trevor then showed us the way with his song Guiding Stars, which had been performed the week before. His message is to look where we’re going, not where we are. This song is about the Fab Club itself, and how getting together there beats sitting at home watching TV. Every person actually became a part of the show by joining in the chorus, “Oh, it’s fab!” , whereby the atmosphere became even more inclusive. (Click here to read more.ed note)

Margaret continued the proceedings with 2 yuke-accompanied songs, one on the (apparently legendary!) George Fromby and another on the

Dennis was next, playing a slightly bluesy song called Saving My Love For You. It was in fact a dedication to the Club, with the chorus being ‘I always seem to end up at the Fab for a cigarette and then a pint or two’. -Click here to read more (ed note)-

Bill then impressed us all with his singing talents, wth his voice as his only instrument. He may be ‘old and (slightly) wrinkled, but his enthusiasm showed no signs of ‘going lame’. Indeed, his ongoing foot-tapping and 15 Times a Night boast makes him ‘an
Ken carried the celebration on with Stay as Sweet as you are, after having entertained us with his ‘Meals on Wheels’ joke.
Mike then rounded off the first half of the show with his Happy Birthday Fab Club song (click here for the song). I would have to agree with him when he sings that ‘acoustic music really isn’t dry’. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance, and in that sun-lit room with smiles aplenty, the atmosphere was warm and the vibe good. Unfortunately, other commitments saw me leave at half-time (but not after putting a dent in the supply of pains au chocolat and onion bhajees), and I therefore passed the reviewing onto Alan. Hope to be back soon, and thank you all!

Review of 2nd and 3rd halves by Alan N.
I didn’t have lunch before leaving
I got to the FAB club at 2
No time to get bored, I was welcomed by Claud
Saying “Al will you write the Review?”.

So after the first break was over
With Liz’s Ethnogrophy pad
I sat down to capture the glorious rapture
Of FAB club, and that can’t be bad.
Mike did the fine introductions
And kept it all bubbling along
Today not a Spencer though hardly from MENSA!
A master of joke and of song.

Then came the culture of Maureen
Two stories – we laughed just a bit!
About a lawnmower that wasn’t a go-er,
And Petty the Snake in the pit!

Liz came on next, Winter Dreaming
Lots of food, though we’d just filled our tummies
Then with a wrench she launched into French
With English translation for dummies!

Joe took us riding to Portsmouth
And Cornwall and left us in tatters.
His organ was small but proved once and for all
It’s what you do with it that matters.

Now came my turn for the spotlight
As usual I bared my own soul.
Love A Duck, about Bill and his lovely wife, Lil,
Then Heather – and ain’t she a doll?

Have you ever seen two Leopards mating?
Sue fondled as Trev boldly played!
Then changed bodhran beaters;
so “Perfect Pitch Cheetahs”:
Be afraid….be VERY afraid.

Then Cheryl joined Claud on the dance floor
For a jive with much flying of hair
Don’t know about you but I felt worn out too
Just watching the two of them there.

Now we took a break for the raffle
And we sang happy birthday together
Tina and Claud dowsed the candles and, Lord!
Their blow job’s a match for my Heather!
Mikanora performed Richard Thompson
And the harmonies sounded so fine
Then the “Worried Man” song and we all sang along -
I’m just glad that roof isn’t mine!

Mickie D next, a true FAB Club virgin
With a poem by Seamus- fascinating!
A Ewan MacColl song of stones that must roll
And a rooster that wouldn’t stop mating!

At last Claud called out for a soft one
And sang in the words of her nation
Then the lovely refrain of “Another Train”
Brought us all to the terminal station.

Another FAB journey was over
And two years clocked up on the dial.
And as for this stab at reviewing for FAB
Well, I just hope that I’ve raised a smile!
